Rhinelander’s Ties to Football: Legends and Landmarks

From historical collections to legendary players, Rhinelander’s football ties run deep.

Rhinelander may be best known for the mythical Hodag, its beautiful Northwoods scenery, and its strong sense of community, but did you know that our town also has a rich connection to the world of football?

The Spars Collection

For football history buffs, Rhinelander is home to an incredible piece of the game’s past—The Spars Collection. Located in the Rhinelander/Oneida County Airport, this extensive collection of football memorabilia features autographed pictures, helmets, footballs, trading cards, a Super Bowl ring and more.

The Final Resting Place of John Heisman

One of the most significant names in football history, John Heisman, rests in Rhinelander’s Forest Home Cemetery. Heisman was a coach and the namesake of college football’s most prestigious individual award, the Heisman Trophy. His impact on the game is immeasurable, from advocating for the forward pass to influencing the strategic play we see today. The Ohio-born football player was buried in Rhinelander in 1936 when his wife, Edith Heisman moved in with her sister, a Rhinelander resident.

The Home of Mike Webster

Rhinelander also boasts a connection to one of the greatest offensive linemen in NFL history—Mike Webster. Born in Tomahawk and raised in Rhinelander, Webster went on to have a Hall of Fame career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. As a key figure in the Steelers’ dynasty of the 1970s, he won four Super Bowls and solidified his place as one of the toughest and most dedicated players the game has ever seen. Webster’s legacy as a Rhinelander native is a point of pride for the community, inspiring young athletes to pursue greatness on and off the field. The football stadium at Rhinelander High School is named the Mike Webster Stadium in his honor.
