4 Spots to See Hodags on Your Next Visit to Rhinelander
Rhinelander has been known as the home of the legendary Hodag for more than a century, and it’s easy to see the pride the community has in this unique Northwoods creature—you’ll see lots of businesses named after the Hodag, and Hodag statues, sculptures and murals can be found all around Rhinelander. Here are a few you shouldn’t miss on your next trip to Rhinelander.
Rhinelander Chamber of Commerce
Just because this is the most obvious Hodag in town doesn’t mean it doesn’t belong on our list. This larger-than-life statue (historical legend says the Hodag was only about 7 feet long and 2½ feet tall) welcomes visitors heading into Rhinelander from the west along Kemp Street (also known as Business Highway 8). Pull into to the Chamber of Commerce parking lot and stroll to the other side of the building to snap a photo with this iconic statue. (Don’t worry, he’s always smiling.)
Pioneer Park Historical Complex
This educational historical site is home to plenty of interesting exhibits—you can see the “5 Spot” steam locomotive, tour a replica logging camp and learn about the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Northwoods—but it’s also a great spot to see Hodags. Keep your eyes peeled for historical “recreations”, murals and more at this family-friendly facility.
The Hodag Store
It only makes sense that there’s a store dedicated to all things Hodag in the heart of Hodag Country. The Hodag Store, located on Lincoln Street just east of Pioneer Park, boasts a broad selection of Hodag clothing, bobbleheads, toys, collectibles, Hodag poop (don’t worry, it’s just candy) and much, much more. Check out the custom-painted Hodag van outside the store, too! (And If you’re not near Rhinelander or don’t have plans to visit soon, you can find great stuff in their online shop!)
Rhinelander Brewing Company
Thirsty? Head to downtown Rhinelander to sample the tasty “Hodag Ales” made by Rhinelander Brewing Company, creator of the original Rhinelander “shorty” beer. Stop by to pick up a six-pack or one of the brewery’s new crowlers!
