The Rhinelander Area offers an outstanding place to fish and boat. Youll find fishing and boating lakes right in the heart of Rhinelander and hundreds more Northwoods lakes within a short drive. The Rhinelander Area is known as the Ice Fishing Capital of the World. However, year-round, the fishing in the Rhinelander Area is spectacular.



Many Hodag Country resorts, cabins and vacation homes are located right on the water and specialize in catering to anglers and boaters. Whether you’re looking to wrestle with a smallmouth bass or enjoy a pontoon boat ride, the Rhinelander Area is the place to be. Some of northern Wisconsin’s most famous fishing lakes can be found in the Rhinelander Area, including Boom Lake, Lake George, Lake Julia and the Willow Flowage. Hodag Country lakes offer walleye, largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, bluegill, yellow perch, northern pike, and of course, musky.

Spring brings outstanding fishing for bluegill, crappie and perch. Northern pike bite throughout the summer. Late summer is the peak time for bass. And, the time for trophy musky and big walleye is late fall.

Ice Fishing

When winter rolls around and the lakes freeze over, its ice fishing time. Rhinelander Area lakes are famous for their excellent ice fishing. The community has been the location for a number of International Ice Fishing Association Championship events. Each winter, anglers catch trophy-size walleye and northern pike from area lakes.
