Find Fall Fun on Rhinelander’s Recreational Trails

Headed to Rhinelander this fall? Get out and explore the trails—we’re home to everything from scenic trails perfect for a leisurely stroll to ATV and UTV trails that are ready and waiting for your four-wheeler.

Here’s a closer look at some trails to try in the Rhinelander Area this fall.

For hikers

The Northwoods of Wisconsin is home to some of the state’s most scenic hiking trails, and you can find several good options in and around Rhinelander. The Almon Park Trail is a short but worthwhile trail system to explore at Almon County Park south of Rhinelander—there are 2.25 miles of trails that travel through uplands and wetlands on the shore of Buck Lake. A picnic area provides a pretty place to stop for a bite after your hike. Closer to town, hikers can visit the Holmboe Nature Preserve to stroll a one-mile route through old-growth forests along the Pelican River.

For bikers

Want to take in the fall scenery on two wheels? Families can explore the popular Bearskin State Trail, an appropriate-for-all-ages route that can be accessed in Heafford Junction west of Rhinelander. Those in search of a thrill should pack up their mountain bikes and head to the Washburn Lake Silent Sports Trail Area, a four-seasons trail system found about 8 miles west of Rhinelander—there are more than 10 miles of mountain bike trails to explore, including six miles of single-track for experienced riders.

For ATVers and UTVers

Oneida County is home to two official trail systems, and the closest one to Rhinelander is the Enterprise Trail System, which features 10 miles of trails in the Oneida County Forest as well as some shorter road routes. Parking can be found on the east side of the trail system on Hildebrand Lake Road and Bowman Road east of Highway 17. On the west side of the trail system, a parking area is located at County Highway G and Zimmer Road. The Enterprise Trail System is about a 10-mile drive south of Rhinelander, depending on which parking area you use.

ATVers looking for overnight camping can find it at the Enterprise Campground, which is open from May to December. Learn more here.

Oneida County ATV trails are open from May through late November/early December, depending on conditions. Contact the county’s Forestry and Outdoor Recreation Department for more information.
